- Ffestiniog and welsh highland railway, the oldest independent railway company in the world, established in 1832, the railway takes you on a 13.5 mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the salet quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, the historic trains climb 700 feet from sea level to mountains, past lakes and waterfalls, clinging to the side of the mountains or even tunnelling through it.
